A Listening Heart
Wisdom makes room to understand before rushing to answer.
James 1:19Quick speech can be a way of protecting ourselves from the discomfort of truly hearing another person. James connects listening, speech, and anger because each reveals what governs our responses.
Listening does not require agreement with everything said. It requires enough humility to understand before evaluating and enough patience to answer the person rather than our assumptions.
Practice one unhurried question today. Let curiosity interrupt defensiveness.
Reflect
In which relationship are you preparing responses more often than you are listening?
A prayer for today
“God of wisdom, slow my reactions and give me a patient, truthful, listening heart.”
